Creation Reserve Merlot 2014

Against the flow.

While the three wards of the Hemel en Aarde are generally known for the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it appears Jean-Claude Martin of Hemel en Aarde Rdige property Creation seems to have a pretty good handle on the Bordeaux varieties, his Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Petit Verdot 2014 rating 90 points in the RisCura Red Hot Wine Awards earlier this year and the Reserve Merlot 2014 also impressed when tasted recently.

Matured for 18 months in French oak, of which 60% was new, the wine shows dark fruit, an olivaceous quality, oyster shell and chocolate. There’s also a somewhat curious but not unattractive spiciness that follows through to the palate. Dense fruit, bright acidity and fine tannins, it’s sleek but not too much so. Price: R325 a bottle.

#WinemagRating; 90/100.
