Daschbosch new releases

By , 1 October 2020

Daschbosch is part of uniWines, the Breedekloof group that farms some 3 000ha of vineyard, and part of winemaker WS Visagie’s brief being to make small batches of relatively high-end, innovative stuff with a view to uplifting the overall image of the brand. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:

Daschbosch Avon Clairette Blanche 2019
Price: R400
Grapes from a Certified Heritage Vineyard 1977 0.4ha in size, total yield 600kg – one barrel inoculated, the other undergoing spontaneous fermentation. Pear, peach and dried herbs on the nose while the palate is light-bodied, fresh and pithy – carries its 5.7g/l of residual sugar well.

CE’s rating: 92/100.

Daschbosch Mossiesdrift Steen 2019
Price: R220
Maiden release of a wine from a Certified Heritage Vineyard 1962 of Chenin Blanc. Honeysuckle, peach and citrus plus a waxy note on the nose while the palate is dense and smooth textured, the finish gently savoury. Accomplished but could perhaps do with a little more freshness.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Daschbosch Skin Contact NV
Price: R280
70% Chenin Blanc and 30% Muscat d’Alexandrie – three months on the skins. Enticing aromatics of pear, peach, flowers and herbs. The palate has great fruit definition, bright acidity and a lightly grippy finish. Though labelled without vintage, this is from the 2019 vintage and is that much tighter and fresher than the 2018 which spent six months on the skins.

CE’s rating: 93/100.

Daschbosch Gevonden Hanepoot 2016
Price: R600 per 375ml bottle
A fortified wine from a vineyard thought to be planted in 1883. Complex aromatics of saltana, honey, dried herbs, spice and bee’s wax. The palate is massively concentrated and thick textured but there’s also bright acidity – layers and layers of flavour.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
