De Grendel Sir David Graaff 2013

Legacy project.

De Grendel joins the ranks of wineries which have breached the R1000-a-bottle barrier, its Sir David Graaff 2013 selling online for R1380 bottle.

Made in honour of the First Baronet of Cape Town 2013 and founder of this Durbanville farm, it comprises 80% Shiraz, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot, components individually matured for 15 months and then blended and further matured for 22 months, 100% new oak throughout.

At this price, the De Grendel is up against the likes of MR de Compostella 2014 (R1 050 a bottle) and Kanonkop Black Label 2015 (R1 580) so mediocrity is not an option lest a serious loss in reputation be incurred.

Happily, the wine is very well executed. On the nose, a subtle note of floral perfume before red and black fruit, pepper, vanilla and some oak spice. The palate is dense and smooth textured in the best sense – plenty of succulent fruit, extraction and oak well judged, a sense of freshness still in evidence.

Editor’s rating: 94/100.
