De Toren Fusion V 2009

Impeccably crafted.

When it comes to De Toren Fusion V, I’ve gone from being totally enamoured with it when it first burst on the scene (maiden vintage 1999) to somewhat alienated on account of how calculated the project seemed to be to entirely respectful  of how commercially successful it has become. 1 500 12-bottle cases of the 2009 at R299 a bottle…

Last night, the 2009 from half-bottle. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 11% Malbec, 10% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot, it showed aromatics of ted and black fruit and some floral notes. The palate was very concentrated with moderate acidity and soft tannis. Plush but stopping just short of being overdone. Some would say premeditated, others would argue the product of meticulous attention to detail. Score: 17/20 but essentially one of those critic-proof wines.

Christian i had this wine twice in Canda. This seems to be canadians favourite south african wine with only Hamilton Russel Pinot Noir in a distant second
