Eikendal Charisma 2011

Goes down like a homesick mole.

Goes down like a homesick mole.

Eikendal Charisma 2011, a blend of 88% Shiraz, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Sangiovese and selling for R72 a bottle from the cellar, won best Shiraz-based blend and discovery of the show (best value gold) at the recent Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.

Detractors of wine competitions contend that judges tend to fall for wines of weight and power on the basis that these are the qualities that stand out in large line-ups but I think that Charisma demonstrates that a competent panel is capable of rewarding lightness and finesse.

Revisiting the wine last night, it’s perhaps not quite the grandest Shiraz-based blend in the country but it really does show wonderful fruit expression and, most especially, freshness.  Very gluggable.

Score: 87/100.
