Eikendal Infused by Earth new releases

Infused by Earth is the name given to the two top-end wines from Stellenbosch cellar Eikendal, the newly released 2017s only the second time that wines have appeared – the maiden vintage, released in 2018, comprised a 2015 Cabernet Franc and 2016 Chardonnay.

Grapes from unirrigated bush vines on the lower slopes of the Helderberg. Matured in a combination of new oak and granite pot for 16 months. Some struck-match reduction before citrus, almond and oatmeal on the nose while the palate is amazingly rich given an alcohol of just 12.5% – dense fruit but also vibrant acidity before a savoury finish. Layered and long, this is at a lovely stage of its development.

Matured for 12 months in 500-litre barrels, 10% new. Red and black berries, rose-like perfume, some leafiness and a hint of pencil shavings on the nose. The palate is restrained and harmonious – discreet fruit, appealing freshness, and fine tannins. Nothing too obtrusive about it making for a sophisticated drop.
