Erin maiden releases

Erin de Vigne is a 69ha property in Bot River, acquired in 2009 by retired marine construction engineer Ted Adam as a base for storing equipment. He and his son Brett, however, became captivated by the rare renosterveld and have since devoted themselves to its conservation. To help fund these efforts, 5ha of vineyard have been planted, including a 20-variety field blend alongside Chenin Blanc.

Winemaking is overseen by Neil and Alice Verberg of Luddite, and the maiden release from the 2024 vintage comprises four bottlings: Mr T’s Savvy Blanc, a white and a red Field Blend, and Written in the Stars Mourvèdre 2024. It’s the two white wines that impress the most.

Mr T’s Savvy Blanc 2024
Price: R220
Described as “off-centre” and, while not explicitly stated, seemingly involving some skin contact. Aromatics of orange peel, stone fruit, a touch of waxiness, plus herbs and spice. The palate shows good fruit concentration, bright acidity and a gently savoury finish. Flavourful and well balanced. Alc: 12.5%.

Field Blend White 2024
Price: R250
28% Chenin Blanc, 16% Grenache Blanc, 12% Clairette Blanche, 12% Colombard, 12% Roussanne, 10% Alvarinho, 4% Viognier, 3% Villard, 3% Nouvelle. Aromatics of lime, peach, tropical fruit, flowers and a pronounced herbal note. The palate is linear and tightly wound – fruit concentration is impressive given the modest alcohol of just 11%, acidity is snappy and the finish bone dry.
