Though the gap between South Africa’s top-end white and red wines may be diminishing, it’s still there as evidenced by two new releases under the Fleur du Cap Unfiltered label from producer-wholesaler Distell.

Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Chenin Blanc 2014

Something to hold on to.

Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Chenin Blanc 2014
Vinotèque price: R115

50% of the grapes from 30-year-old vineyard in Paarl, fermented and matured for eight months in old oak, 50% from a 20-year-old vineyard in Darling tank fermented. Citrus, stone fruit, oak spice and a hint of reduction. Rich and thick textured but this offset by punchy acidity. A big wine but very expressive and not entirely without grace. Serve in a big-bowl Burgundy glass for best results!

#WinemagRating: 93/100.

Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Pintoage 2014
Vinotèque price: R135

Grapes from a Agter-Paarl vineyard planted in 1994 and a Bottelary vineyard in 1987. Matured for 12 months in oak, 30% new. Neopolitan ice-cream (!) on the nose – strawberries, vanilla and chocolate. The palate shows sweet berry fruit, moderate acidity and soft tannins. Extremely polished and sure to have its fans but a bit too obvious for this commentator.

#WinemagRating: 88/100.
