By Christian Eedes, 14 December 2024
Francis Wines is the label belonging to former professional rugby union player Burton Francis, the wines made in conjunction with Kevin Grant of Ataraxia. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:
Francis Chardonnay 2023
Price: R495
Grapes from Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. Matured for nine months in older 500-litre barrels. Subtle notes of white peach and citrus on the nose. The palate is fruit-driven – good concentration, zesty acidity and a lightly pithy finish. A nicely judged, elegant take on the variety. Not without weight, the alcohol being 13%.
CE’s rating: 92/100.
Francis Pinot Noir 2023
Price: R595
Grapes from Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. 20% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 11 months in older 228-litre barrels. The nose shows red cherry, rose and a hint of earth while the palate is well balanced with clean, juicy fruit, bright acidity and fine tannins. Appealing and readily accessible.
CE’s rating: 91/100.
