Glenelly Lady May 2011

By , 21 November 2016

Glenelly in Stellenbosch was founded by May-Eliane de Lencquesaing of Bordeaux second growth Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande and it’s therefore hard to imagine the property’s flagship wine ever deviating from the Bordeaux template. That said, the property does seem to make fine Syrah, this variety appearing in the second label Estate Reserve as well as it being the pick of the various wines bottled under the modestly priced Glass Collection label.

Glenelly Glass Collection Syrah 2014
Price: R90
100% whole bunch fermentation, matured for 12 months in older oak. Red and black fruit, floral fragrance, fynbos and a hint of white pepper. Light and fresh with pleasantly grippy tannins – very pretty.

#WinemagRating: 90/100.

Glenelly Estate Reserve 2011
Price: R145
Previously “Grand Vin”. 36% Syrah, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Matured for 18 months in French oak, 30% new. On the nose, red and black fruit, smoked meat, fynbos plus vanilla and pencil shavings. The palate is medium bodied, fresh and savoury – has an understated classiness about it if not exactly profound.

#WinemagRating: 90/100.

Glenelly Lady May 2011

Classically styled.

Glenelly Lady May 2011
Price: R310
85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot. Matured for 24 months in French oak, 100% new. Cassis, violets, some leafiness and pencil shavings. Quite lean with fresh acidity and fine, powdery tannins, the finish very dry. Apparently mistaken for Bordeaux in an MW exam and it’s not difficult to see why.

#WinemagRating: 91/100.
