GM & Ahrens Vintage Cuvée Brut 2015

By , 2 October 2020

The House of GM & Ahrens is a partnership between lawyer Gerrit Maritz and winemaker Albert Ahrens, their main offering being the Vintage Cuvée Cap Classique. Combining Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, grapes are sourced from multiple pockets across the Western Cape, all portions barrel fermented before secondary fermentation and a further three years on the lees.

The 2015 vintage is currently available at R570 a bottle, and having not encountered previous releases, I have to say I found it a revelation. The nose is super-complex with notes of citrus, stone fruit, macerated strawberry, honey, fresh bread and some leesy complexity while the palate is rich and full but equally possessing bright acidity, the mousse wonderfully creamy, the finish long and savoury. Great depth and intricacy of flavour and very well balanced. A real find.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
