Grondpad Shiraz 2018 is made by viticulturist Bennie Boosen and winemaker Bernard le Roux of Zorgvliet from Banghoek grapes. Price: R235 a bottle.

Matured for 18 months in older 225-litre barrels, and coming in at 14% alcohol, it’s full but balanced. Red and black berries, cinnamon, aniseed and earth on the nose precede a palate of power and depth. It’s smooth textured but not too much so, the finish nicely dry.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
