Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay 2018

By , 7 October 2019

Well built.

If the 2017 vintage of the Chardonnay from Hemel-en-Aarde Valley property Hamilton Russell Vineyards seemed attenuated, this is certainly not the case when it comes to the 2018. Though the alcohol is a relatively modest 13%, the wine packs plenty of fruit power. On the nose, a hint of smoky reduction, lime and lemon plus a touch of spice (maturation lasted nine months in a combination of French oak, of which 28% was new, and amphorae) while the palate is deep and rich with a pleasantly greasy texture, the finish long and savoury. Approximate retail price: R499 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.
