Grapes for the Amphora Chardonnay 2020 under the top-end Haute Collection label from Franschhoek producer Haute Cabrière come from a 1983 vineyard with heritage status as certified by the Old Vine Project, winemaking involving fermentation in a 450-litre clay amphora before maturation lasting 12 months.
The nose shows blossom, lime and lemon while the palate has a dense core of fruit matched by bright acidity, the finish long and savoury. It’s vivid, pure and full of refreshment. Unadorned in the best sense, a very clear transmission of what seems to be a special vineyard. Price: R500 a bottle.
