Hermit on the Hill Syrah 2015

Keeping the dream alive.

The Syrah from Stellenbosch property Lievland was a category front runner in the early 2000s when the property was owned by Cape Wine Master Paul Benadé but then the property was sold and the label dropped from prominence although those in the know continue to hold the actual site in high regard.

Pieter de Waal of Hermit on the Hill managed to get some Lievland grapes for his Syrah 2015, the outcome quite delicious. Involving 20% whole bunch fermentation and matured for 18 months in older oak, the nose shows floral perfume and scrub before red and black fruit, spice and a little cured meat. Medium bodied with a cracking line of acidity and fine tannins, it’s delicious to drink. Price: R100 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.
