Hogan Wines sees Jocelyn Hogan Wilson, previously of La Bri in Franschhoek, return to winemaking after a break to start a family. She now buys grapes from around the Cape and makes the wine in rented cellar space.
The maiden vintage Chenin Blanc 2014 comes from 38-year-old Swartland vineyard and as for vinification, fermentation occurred spontaneously, while maturation in fourth-fill French oak barrels lasted 10 months.
The nose shows top notes of honeysuckle and dried herbs before white peach through pineapple, spice and some yeasty complexity. The palate is medium bodied with pure fruit and fresh acidity before a gently pithy finish. A sophisticated and subtle own-label debut. Price: R190 a bottle.
Winemag rating: 92/100.
