Huis van Chevallerie Filia Brut Nature 2014

A horse of a different colour.

Christa von La Chevallerie is a top Swartland grape grower who makes some own-label bubbly as a side project.

Chevallerie uses Chenin Blanc to make her Filia Brut Nature and the 2014 is drinking very well right now. Matured for 14 months on the lees and degorged without dosage, it shows a little potpourri before yellow peach, honey, spice, yeasty complexity and perhaps some licorice. The palate is intensely flavoured with bright acidity and a fine mousse, the finish markedly savoury. It’s not exactly delicate but it ain’t short of personality, either. Wine Cellar price: R350 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.
