Intellego Kolbroek 2015

Jurgen Gouws, who worked with Craig Hawkins at prominent Swartland property Lammershoek before the change of ownership, continues to make some individualistic wines under his own label called Intellego. Tasting notes and ratings for the latest releases below:

Intellego Chenin Blanc 2015
Wine Cellar price: R155
Grapes from two blocks, one in Paardeberg planted in 1965 and the other in Abbotsdale planted in 1980. Fermented and matured for 11 months in old barrels of various sizes. Dried peach and apricot, a hint of floral perfume, hay and some yeasty complexity. Excellent concentration without being at all weighty, fresh but not aggressive acidity and a savoury finish – layers of flavour combined with lovely drinkability.

Intellego Elementis 2015
Wine Cellar price: R225
Chenin Blanc, which underwent semi-carbonic fermentation – destemmed before spending three weeks in closed tank. Initially, some reductive pong on the nose but this dissipates with time in glass to reveal stone fruit and some subtle floral perfume.  Light bodied but intensely flavoured with tangy acidity and a particularly savoury finish.

Intellego Kolbroek 205
Wine Cellar price: R175
From two parcels of Syrah, one schist and the other gravel. 100% whole-bunch fermentation, maturation lasting nine months in 500-litre barrels. The nose is wonderfully intricate with notes of red fruit, dried herbs, purple flowers, white pepper and earth. The palate is equally pleasing – pure fruit, lemon-like acidity and lovely fine tannins. A light but extraordinarily well-defined wine.
