Jakob’s Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
By Christian Eedes, 11 March 2021
Restless River is not the only single-variety Cabernet Sauvignon out of the great Hemel-en-Aarde area – André and Yvonne de Lange farm 1ha of the variety on their Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge property, the maiden vintage 2006 famously winning a museum class trophy at the 2014 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.
Current release, as made by Peter-Allan Finlayson of Crystallum and Gabriëlskloof in a consultancy capacity, is 2016. Fermentation occurred spontaneously before maturation lasting 24 months in French oak, 30% new. Red and black berries, fresh herbs and a touch of earth on the nose while the palate shows plenty of succulent fruit, fresh acidity and powdery tannins, the overall impression being of a youthful, exuberant drop (alcohol is 14.3%). Price: R220 a bottle..
CE’s rating: 90/100.
