Jasper Raats Single Vineyard Driefontein Sauvignon Blanc 2015
By Christian Eedes, 20 February 2017
Jasper Raats worked extensively with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir during a seven-year stint in New Zealand so his local renditions of these two varieties make for interesting reference points. Tasting notes and ratings for current releases as follows:
Jasper Raats Single Vineyard Driefontein Sauvignon Blanc 2015
Price: R180
From a Helderberg vineyard farmed according to biodynamics. Fermented and matured for 12 months in old 300-litre barrels. The nose is initially neutral but reveals some blackcurrant and a certain leafiness upon closer scrutiny. The palate meanwhile has impressive weight and texture, the acidity none too sharp, the finish savoury. A smart, edgy take on the variety.
Editor’s rating: 93/100.
Jasper Raats Single Vineyard Cuvée Rika Pinot Noir 2014
Price: R240
From a Elgin vineyard. Matured for 11 months in French oak, 13% new. Some rose petal perfume, red cherry and spice on the nose while the palate is light bodied and fresh. A pleasing restraint about it.
Editor’s rating: 90/100.
