Chris Keet, who used to make a cult Bordeaux-style red blend in the form of Cordoba Crescendo, continues in that vein under his own label, the wine called First Verse.
The 2012 is a blend of 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, 12% Petit Verdot and 6% Malbec. It shows top notes of fresh herbs and violets before red and black fruit, pencil shavings and the merest hint of chocolate. The wine is full bodied but not too weighty – good fruit concentration, snappy acidity and nicely grippy tannins. Proper kit. Wine Cellar price: R385 a bottle.
