Kershaw Elgin Clonal Selection Chardonnay 2016
By Christian Eedes, 10 October 2017
Since first bottling in 2012, Richard Kershaw of Richard Kershaw Wines in Elgin has quickly established himself as one of South Africa’s leading practitioners of Chardonnay. Speaking at the recent Elgin Chardonnay Colloquium, Kershaw relates vintage conditions in 2016 were such that fuller wines with softer acidities ensued and this is borne out in his own wine.
On the nose, yellow peach, lemon and orange plus a hint of reduction and a little spice. The palate is rich and broad but balanced – great fruit expression, the acidity fresh enough and the finish long and pithy. The wine has a flamboyance about it which will win it many fans. Price: R520 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 91/100.
