Klein Amoskuil new releases

By , 23 January 2025

Klein Amoskuil is the Swartland property acquired by Charles Back in 1997, the wines from here for a long while appearing under the Spice Route label but recently given their own identity. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases (all organically certified) as follows:

The Amos Block Sauvignon Blanc 2023
Price: R225
Grapes from a certified heritage vineyard planted in 1965, the oldest of this variety in the country. 30% fermented in older oak. Citrus, peach, granadilla, dried grass and some leesy complexity on the nose. The palate has good fruit weight, a creamy texture and well-integrated acidity, the finish gently savoury. Alcohol is a relatively low 12.28% but this is pleasantly rich and round.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Bok Amok Bush Vine Grenache 2023
Price: R225
Grapes from a vineyard planted in 2006 on granite. Matured for 10 months in old oak. Pretty aromatics with notes of cranberry, raspberry and white pepper plus hints of rose and white pepper. The palate is light and fresh with soft tannins, the finish nevertheless dry – a charming wine. Alc: 12.04%.

CE’s rating: 90/100.

Die Nagmuis Bush Vine Syrah 2023
Price: R225
Grapes from a vineyard planted in 2001 on iron-rich koffieklip soils. Matured for 10 months in old oak. An enticing nose of red and black berries, orange, pomegranate, floral perfume, and white pepper. The palate has succulence and vibrancy – pure fruit, racy acidity and powdery tannins. Just a little short on the finish.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
