La Motte Pierneef Syrah Viognier 2015
By Christian Eedes, 16 August 2017
Not only is the Pierneef Syrah Viognier from Franschhoek cellar La Motte highly critically acclaimed but it’s also made in meaningful volumes, 81 000 bottles in the case of the current-release 2015.
A blend of 94% Syrah (sourced from Walker Bay and Elim) plus 6% Viognier (Franschhoek), it was matured for 18 months in 300-litre barrels, 75% new. The nose shows floral perfume before red berries and peach plus white pepper and some subtle vanilla. The palate is medium bodied with fresh acidity and relatively soft tannins, the finish gently savoury. As usual, it’s very well constructed – plush but not too much so. Price: R250 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 92/100.
