Lateganskop The Zahir 2014

Object of fascination.

Object of fascination.

Yet another topdrop produced as part of the Breedekloof Chenin Blanc Initiative is The Zahir 2014 from Lateganskop.

Grapes from a 21-year-old vineyard, a portion of these were cold soaked for 48 hours to extract extra flavour, before spontaneous fermentation and 11 months maturation in old oak.

It’s not exactly everyday drinking being overtly oxidative but you can’t fault it for lack of interest. Honey and a particular yeasty note is what’s immediately noticeable but you’ll also find cut-apple, citrus, peach and even a little dried apricot. With time, top notes of potpourri and dried herbs emerge.

The wine is rich and full flavoured, possessing both breadth and depth. Succulent fruit upfront before a pronounced savoury quality on the finish. It’s going to leave a lot of people bemused but I think it’s delicious. Price: R130 a bottle.

Score: 93/100.
