Le Sueur Paradoks 2016
By Christian Eedes, 22 November 2017
The relationship between Pinotage and its parent grapes Cinsaut and Pinot Noir seems to be a point of fascination for more and more winemakers – Beyerskloof makes a three-way blend under the Traildust label as does Ataraxia under the Serenity label while Lanzerac has just launched Prof 2016, a 60:40 blend of Cinsaut and Pinot Noir as part of the Keldermeester Versameling.
Also in the mix is Louis Le Sueur, winemaker at De Krans in Calitzdorp, with his Paradoks 2016. A 50:50 blend of Calitzdorp Cinsaut planted in 1966 and Outeniqua Pinot Noir, it’s modest but quite charming. On the nose, there’s a little reduction but this blows off to reveal red cherry, strawberry and raspberry plus some fynbos and a little caramel while the palate is light and fresh and the finish gently savoury. Price: R175 a bottle.
