Lismore Syrah 2016
By Christian Eedes, 20 November 2017
The Syrah 2016 from Samantha O’Keefe of Lismore sees her trademark refinement in evidence again after the more unrestrained 2015 (see here). From 50% Greyton and 50% Elgin, 40% underwent whole-bunch fermentation, the wine was matured for 12 months in a combination of 225-, 300- and 500-litre barrels, 15% new.
The nose shows cherry, raspberry and mulberry to go with white pepper and a hint of smoke. The palate is not too lean, not too weighty, just right with great fruit definition, lemon-like acidity and lightly grippy tannins. Very nicely balanced indeed. Price: R360 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 94/100.
