Litigo Pinot Noir 2014
By Christian Eedes, 1 August 2016
Trademark lawyer Eben van Wyk makes a Pinot Noir in conjunction with Peter-Allan Finlayson of Crystallum under the Litigo label and the 2014 vintage is worth seeking out.
50% of the grapes come from a Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge vineyard and 25% each from Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and Kaaimansgat, fermentation involving some whole bunch and occurring spontaneously, maturation lasting 10 months in 228-litre barrels, 20% new.
On the nose, red cherry, roses and spice while the palate is not insubstantial with good fruit concentration, bright acidity and relatively firm but fine tannins. Approximate retail price: R275 a bottle.
