Luddite Saboteur White 2015 and Red 2014
By Christian Eedes, 2 March 2016
The Saboteur range from Luddite Wines in Bot River might have won gold at the recent Wine Label Design Awards for its highly unconventional packaging (see here) but is what’s in the bottle any good?
Luddite Saboteur White 2015
Sold out.
68% Chenin Blanc, 15% Viognier, 15% Blanc Fumé and 2% Chardonnay. Total production: 2 100 bottles, closed under crowncap. The nose shows a floral top note before citrus and white peach, spice and the vaguest hint of vanilla. The palate is rich and broad but beautifully balanced. Good weight and texture, nicely coated acidity and a pithy finish. This is immaculately crafted stuff whatever the name might imply.
#WinemagRating: 93/100.
Luddite Saboteur Red 2014
Price: R230
77% Shiraz, 19% Mourvèdre and 4% Cabenet Sauvignon. Total production: 14 000 bottles, 3000 under crowncap. Hugely expressive on nose and palate: Red and black fruit, pepper and spice, liquorice, black olive, scrub and some earthiness. Rich but balanced – lovely fruit expression, the mouthfeel smooth in a good way, no shortage of freshness and an admirably savoury finish. The most accomplished vintage to date.
#WinemagRating: 93/100.
