Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

On the money.

If the Cabernet Sauvignon from Stellenbosch property Meerlust has tended to be rather too thin and green in recent times, the 2014 vintage is a riper, fuller flavoured wine.

It was matured for 21 months in French oak, of which 50% was new and 50% second-fill and the alcohol is 14%. On the nose, red and black fruit, vanilla and oak spice as well as some trademark herbal character which in this instance suits the wine rather than being discordant. The palate is medium bodied, densely packed with fruit although not short of freshness, the tannins having a sleekness about them. Form is temporary, class is permanent, as they say, and this wine is further suggestion that Meerlust is on its way back to the top. Wine Cellar price: R325 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.
