Meerlust Rubicon 2012
By Christian Eedes, 18 May 2016
If the 2010 vintage of the Bordeaux-style Rubicon from Meerlust in Stellenbosch presented as excessively green (see here), the 2012 seems more on point.
A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, the wine was matured for 20 months in French oak, 65% new. It shows more red than black fruit and attractive oak-derived notes. There is some pyrazine character in evidence but this presents as a subtle and winning leafiness. Unapologetically old school in style, it’s medium to full-bodied with fresh acidity and fine tannins. It should keep the classicists happy. Wine Cellar price: R329 a bottle.
