Marelise Niemann, previously assistant winemaker at Beaumont, continues to make some smart wines under her own label called Momento. Tasting notes and ratings for two of her latest releases as follows:
Momento Chenin Blanc Verdelho 2015
Wine Cellar price: R195
91% Chenin Blanc (from Bot River and Swartland) and 9% Verdelho (Bot River). Matured for 10 months in old 400-litre barrels. Especially vibrant in colour. Citrus, white peach and a hint of “wet wool” on the nose while the palate is light and zesty but paradoxically not without texture, the finish super-dry. An individualistic and engaging wine.
#WinemagRating: 90/100.
Momento Grenache 2015
Wine Cellar price: R250
Grapes are sourced from the Swartland, 92% Grenache Noir and 8% Carignan. One third whole-bunch fermentation, maturation lasting 15 months in old 225-litre barrels. Red and black cherry, purple flowers, earth and spice on the nose. The palate is relatively rich and full (alcohol is 14%) but bright acidity ensures balance. Agreeably rustic and unrefined.
#WinemagRating: 91/100.

Hi Christian,
How does the 2014 Grenache Noir compare to the newly released 2015?

Hi Francois, I haven’t drunk the two vintages next to each other but my instinct is that the 2014 has a shade more complexity and balance than the 2015.
