Momento new releases
By Christian Eedes, 9 June 2020
Marelise Niemann of Momento is enamoured with Verdelho on account of its vibrant acidity and general suitability to South African growing conditions and it appears prominently in her two-way blend but there’s also a dash in her Grenache Gris as well as her new single-variety Grenache Blanc. Her wines from the 2019 vintage are as characterful and compelling as ever.
Momento Chenin Blanc Verdelho 2019
74% Chenin Blanc (Swartland, Bot River) plus 26% Verdelho (Voor Paardeberg, Bot River). Lemon, naartjie and orange, spice plus some leesy complexity. Lovely fruit concentration, punchy acidity and a pithy finish, this is flavour packed.
CE’s rating: 94/100.
Momento Grenache Gris 2019
Grapes from the Voor Paardeberg. Includes 10% Verdelho. Pear, white peach, lime and dried herbs on the nose. Relatively lean with fresh acidity and a saline finish. Tightly wound and very striking.
CE’s rating: 93/100.
Momento Grenache Blanc 2019
Grapes from Voor Paardeberg and Bot River. Includes 10% Grenache Gris and 5% Verdelho. The nose is shy, the palate broad and gently savoury. With subtle hints of pear and white peach, this is a well-balanced, understated rendition of the variety.
CE’s rating: 91/100.
