Think Stellenbosch, think Cabernet Sauvignon. Think Swartland, think Chenin Blanc and Syrah. Think Franschhoek and you’re kinda left wondering what the district’s signature variety is. However, as far as Clayton Reabow of Môreson is concerned, then Chardonnay must be up for consideration, this valley floor property having 15ha under vineyard, 98% of which is planted to Chardonnay, incorporating no less than 13 different clones.
Takes no prisoners.
Reabow’s Mercator Chardonnay 2017 is not what you might describe as dialed back, having undergone 100% malolactic fermentation and matured for 12 months in French oak, 40% new. On the nose, there is a hint of reduction before lots of lime and lemon and some floral perfume in the background. The palate displays pure fruit and punchy acidity before a savoury finish. It’s a dramatic wine that’s nevertheless balanced and flavourful and will appeal to those that feel that the current crop of Chardonnays are in danger of becoming too lean. Price: R270 a bottle.

In my humble opinon, we need to distinguish if we’re talking about current production (and the old vines around) or the terroir’s suitability to varietals (future potential) regardless of wines currently produced.

Chamonix, Môreson, Glenwood, La Bri & Mont Rochelle.. all phenomenal Chardonnays, with the local and international honours to back it up. Add to this the MCC’s they produce, you can’t argue against Chardonnay being Franschhoek’s claim to fame..
I tasted the 2017 upon release, after Clayton won the Diners Club Winemaker of the year in 2018 with that wine, against some serious competition. One of the best South African Chard’s I’ve ever tasted.

I’d say semillon is a pretty obvious choice in Franschhoek if you’re desperate to pin a variety to an area.
