Mullineux Old Vines White 2018
By Christian Eedes, 3 June 2019
The 2018 vintage of Mullineux Old Vines White makes a big impression. A blend of 69% Chenin Blanc, 12% Clairette Blanche, 9% Grenache Blanc, 7% Viognier and 3% Semillon Gris and matured for 10 months in third- and fourth-fill French oak 500-litrebarrels and one new 2000-litre foudre, the nose shows citrus and stone fruit to go with hay, ginger and other spice. The palate is power-packed – thick textured and intensely flavoured with coated acidity and a savoury finish. Alcohol is 14% compared to 13.5% in 2017 and 13% in 2016. It’s excellent but those of more delicate sensibilities may find it a one-glass affair. Wine Cellar price: R305 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 93/100.
