Mullineux Schist “Roundstone” Syrah 2016
By Christian Eedes, 20 August 2018
The new Single Terroir wines from Swartland outfit Mullineux Wines are out and the three examples of Syrah are once again must-buys for any serious collector. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:
Mullineux Granite Chenin Blanc 2017
Wine Cellar price: R540
A definite note of reduction before white peach and citrus, flowers and herbs in the background. The palate shows pure fruit, fresh acidity and a pithy finish. Quite lean and phenolic – seems shut down right now.
Editor’s rating: 92/100.
Mullineux Quartz “Leliefontein” Chenin Blanc 2017
Wine Cellar price: R540
White peach and citrus plus some funky leesy character. The palate is richer than its counterpart above with layers of flavour, seemingly quite moderate acidity and a gently savoury finish. Has a slight rusticity about it which only adds interest to the drinking experience.
Editor’s rating: 92/100.
Mullineux Granite Syrah 2016
Wine Cellar price: R995
A most compelling nose – a top note of fynbos before red and black fruit plus a little bacon. The palate displays excellent fruit definition and fine tannins giving it lovely presence and texture. So beautifully balanced and all of apiece.
Editor’s rating: 96/100.
Mullineux Iron Syrah 2016
Wine Cellar price: R995
Very aromatic with notes of red and black fruit, olive, earth and herbs. The palate is super-concentrated but equally super-detailed. Plenty of fruit power and big, crunchy tannins – dramatic stuff.
Editor’s rating: 95/100.
Mullineux Schist “Roundstone” Syrah 2016
Wine Cellar price: R995
A pretty nose with top notes of lilies, rosemary and lavender before red fruit, white pepper and coriander plus a hint of reduction that only suits the wine. The palate is light but pure with wonderfully lithe tannins, the finish long and gently savoury. As ever, the most elegant of the trio.
Editor’s rating: 96/100.
