Nederburg The Winemaster’s Reserve Grenache 2013

By , 23 June 2014

Chilled out.

Chilled out.

Want further proof that Grenache is shaping is the next big thing when it comes to reds? Consider that The Winemaster’s Reserve Grenache made by Nederburg for Woolworths has gone from R59 a bottle for the 2010 vintage to R74.95 for the currently available 2013. That’s an increase of 27%, somewhat ahead of the 6.6% inflation rate.

The 2013 is pretty with notes of red fruit and fynbos on the nose, the palate medium bodied with fresh acidity and soft tannins. Not exactly complex but true to purpose as a “café red” – serve lightly chilled with a plate of charcuterie.

Score: 87/100.

Hi Christian, while the price has increased by 27% over the 3 year period this is the equivalent of an annual increase of 8.3% for each of the 3 years versus the annual inflation rate of 6.6%. It’s ahead of inflation, but only just.

Thanks, James. My high-school maths teacher would not be impressed at such a basic error. The point I was trying to make is that here’s a wine that’s seeing small but meaningful price increases every when so many producers are compelled to hold their prices…
