Nederburg The Winemaster’s Reserve Shiraz 2009

Nederburg's Razvan Macici with one of the 800 000 bottles of Winemaster's Reserve Shiraz 2009.

With at least some Shiraz enthusiasts on tenterhooks regarding who will be announced winner of the eighth annual and apparently last Wine magazine Shiraz Challenge (this year sponsored by Brenn-O-Kem), let me alert you to the rather good Nederburg The Winemaster’s Reserve Shiraz 2009 costing R65 a bottle from the tasting room.

Grapes are from Philadelphia and the wine was matured for 12 months in oak, just 15% new. This is not a wine of great pretentions but the purity of fruit makes it impossible to ldislike, and with total production being 600 000 litres plenty to go around. Worth remembering that the 2006 vintage won the 2008 Shiraz Challenge.
