Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Pinot Noir 2015

On song.

The Family Vineyards Pinot Noir 2015 from Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley producer Newton Johnson is as accomplished as ever. Fermentation occurred spontaneously, the wine matured for 11 months in a combination of 228- and 500-litre French oak barrels, 27% new.

On the nose, heady perfume – roses in full bloom, red cherry, cloves and other spice. The 2015 growing season was dry, harvest earlier than usual and the result seems to be a wine slightly more rich and full than usual. Pure fruit, moderate acidity, soft tannins. As you might expect, it’s wonderfully composed – real depth of flavour without sacrificing elegance. Price: R290 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 93/100.
