Newton Johnson in Upper Hemel en Aarde, Full Stop Rock selling for around R180 a bottle the understudy to Granum which sells for R345 or so.
The 2017 vintage of Full Stop Rock is a blend of 78% Syrah, 18% Grenache and 4% Mourvèdre, winemaking involving some whole-bunch and maturation lasting 12 months in 228- and 500-litre barrels, 8% new.
The nose shows a slight meaty note to go with red fruit, cinnamon and other spice and the palate is relatively light-bodied, flavourful and fresh with a nice dry finish (alcohol: 13.89%). An honest drop in the sense of not feeling over-engineered.
Editor’s rating: 90/100.
