Newton Johnson Full Stop Rock 2018

The 2018 vintage of the Syrah Grenache Mourvèdre blend that is Full Stop Rock from Upper Hemel en Aarde property Newton Johnson is as reliable as ever. Very fragrant on the nose with notes of rose, red fruit, pepper and spice while the palate is light and energetic with fine tannins. Not super-complex but immensely likeable and more-ish although perhaps a little pricey at approximately R200 a bottle, it has to be said.
CE’s rating: 90/100.

Hi Phil, Try the Simonsig Grenache Syrah Mourvèdre 2018. Also 90 points and just R95 a bottle…

And/but then you might as well settle for the Essay Syrah Mourvedre Grenache Cinsault 2018 from MAN Wines just down the road from Simonsig: also 90 points and just R85 a bottle.

I don’t see a 90 point score for the Essay wine here… ?

Hi Tom, Now that you mention it, you’re quite right. I thought this Essay wine might have featured in our “Best Value” programme of last year but evidently not. Given the involvement of the Myburghs of Joostenberg and Jose Conde of Stark-Conde in the project, a 90-point score is not beyond the bounds of possibility but not from us. Top Wine SA, clear to clarify?

The Essay was scored 90/100 by the Gilbert & Gaillard panel – primarily French palates, with an office in Stellenbosch.

Great wine, but not at the newly inflated asking price. At R120 – R140, it makes sense, but at R200, one can do better.
