Newton Johnson Resonance 2017

Patience required.

The white blend that is Resonance 2017 from Upper Hemel-en-Aarde property Newton Johnson Vineyards appears quite severe in its youth. It consists of 73% Sauvignon Blanc and 27% Semillon, the former component undergoing spontaneous fermentation in tank and the latter fermented and matured for three months in 500-litre barrels. The nose shows some reduction before white peach, citrus, thatch and some herbal character while the palate is rich but equally tightly wound, the finish long and savoury. A year or two of bottle maturation will only serve this wine well. Approximate retail price: R185 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 92/100.
