Off the Record Chenin Blanc 2019

By , 23 April 2021

The 2019 vintage of Off the Record Chenin Blanc is the second release from winemaking brothers Mark and Bobby Wallace, their intention being to create a distinctively Elgin rendition of the variety, grapes sourced from the Casey’s Ridge property owned by Vrede en Lust.

The 2019 is that much more substantial than its predecessor while still possessing all the refreshment value that white wines from cool-climate Elgin typically possess. Spontaneously fermented and matured in older oak for 10 months, 25% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. The nose shows apple and stone fruit plus some yeasty complexity while the palate has a particularly piquant quality about it – good fruit expression, tangy acidity and a dry finish. Price: R220 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 90/100.
