Opstal Cabernet Sauvignon Cinsault 2017

By , 11 April 2018

Opstal in Breedekloof has two new wines offering great quality relative to price (for which read: utterly smashable and under R100). Tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Opstal Chenin Blanc 2017
Price: R95
25% is from the Carl Everson vineyard and 75% from the highest planted Chenin vineyard on the estate – 375m above sea level. 75% of the wine spent eight months in old 2 500-litre Foudres and 500-litre old French oak barrels with 25% unoaked. Pear, citrus and white peach on the nose. Good fruit concentration and fresh acidity before a pithy finish. Not too complex – clean and refreshing. Alc: 13%.

Editor’s rating: 88/100.

Opstal Cabernet Sauvignon Cinsault 2017

Unbearable lightness of being.

Opstal Cabernet Sauvignon Cinsault 2017
Price: R95
50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Cinsault. The Cinsault vineyard, planted in 1997 and initially high yielding, production has decreased considerably resulting  in wines of better concentration. Red and black cherry with some fresh herbs in the background. Light bodied with juicy fruit and fresh acidity – great fun to drink. Alc: 13%.

Editor’s rating: 87/100.
