Opstal-Cabernet-Sauvignon-Cinsault-2018

Freewheeling.

Attie Louw of Opstal in Breedekloof has made a name for himself in recent times with his more premium wines in the Carl Everson range as well as The Barber Semillon but his two current-release, standard-label offerings also deserve attention, these both offering terrific quality relative to price.

Opstal Cabernet Sauvignon Cinsault 2018
Price: R95
55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Cinsault. Fermented in open-top concrete tank, 50% of the Cinsault with its stems. Very aromatic with notes of red fruit, rose and rooibos. The palate is light, fresh and energetic – great fruit definition, the finish suitably savoury. Alcohol: 12.9%.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.

Opstal Chenin Blanc 2018
Price: R95
Spontaneous fermentation before maturation lasting eight months, 60% in foudre and 40% in tank. Stone fruit, straw and dried herbs on the nose. Good fruit concentration balanced by tangy acidity. Has just the right amount of heft. Alcohol: 12.9%.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.
