Opstal Carl Everson Chenin Blanc 2015

Heavy duty.

What we know about the 2015 vintage is that it was one of the driest and earliest in years. Grapes were generally healthy and almost all producers have been very positive about the resulting wines.

My impression of 2015 so far is that it is a year which led to particular fruit concentration which, on the face of it, is a good thing but in quite a few instances, I find myself wondering if this came at the expense of finesse.

The Carl Everson Chenin Blanc 2015 from Opstal in Slanghoek shows citrus, ginger, spice and a some yeasty complexity on the nose. The palate is rich and oily with an impression of sweetness upfront before a savoury finish. It’s very good but lacks the same freshness and detail of previous vintages. Price: R150 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 92/100.
