Paul Roos Farming is the empowerment project of the Roos family who have a property between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, the initiative named after rugby legend and educator Paul Roos, who was born here on 30 October 1880.
Gus Dale joined as winemaker in 2012 and a maiden vintage white and red were recently released, profits used to finance the education of the farm children. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:
Paul Roos Die Skoolhoof 2014
Price: R225
80% Chenin Blanc and 20% Chardonnay. Spontaneous fermentation and maturation in 300-litre barrels, 20% new. Very little primary fruit in evidence on the nose – a hint of peach, subtle spice and some yeasty character. Rich and broad on the palate with moderate acidity and a gently savoury finish. What it might lack in accuracy, it makes up for in intrigue.
#WinemagRating: 89/100.
Paul Roos Die Filantroop 2014
Price: R449
60% Shiraz plus equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinotage. Spontaneous fermentation in open 600-litre barrels, maturation involving only 25% new oak. Red and black berries plus some darker, more earthy notes on nose and palate. Luscious fruit and a dense mid-palate. Not short of freshness, however, and the tannins are wonderfully fine, extraction well judged.
#WinemagRating: 91/100.
