Pieter Ferreira Extra Brut Rosé 2013
By Christian Eedes, 29 July 2020
The sub-category of Cap Classique that is Rosé tends to be slightly weaker relative to Brut or Blanc de Blancs essentially because these wines are entirely or at least largely from difficult-to-grow Pinot Noir rather than ever-reliable Chardonnay.
Unsurprisingly, however the Extra Brut Rosé 2013 from expert Cap Classique maker Pieter Ferreira is very fine indeed. Consisting solely of Pinot Noir sourced from both Elgin and Slanghoek Valley, this was disgorged in November 2019, the equivalent of over six years on the lees.
Salmon pink in colour, the nose shows strawberry, nectarine and orange while the palate has good depth of flavour with a creamy mousse. It’s wonderfully rich while remaining very clean and precise. Approximate retail price: R420 a bottle.
CE’s rating: 91/100.
