A small tweak to how the cuvées in the Pieter Ferreira Cap Classique range are positioned, the Extra Brut and the Rosé now priced the same, the Blanc de Blancs thus becoming the pinnacle wine. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:

Birdsong Extra Brut 2022
Price: R385
71% Chardonnay, 29% Pinot Noir, sourced from Robertson and Stellenbosch.  A small portion of the base wine fermented in clay pot. Matured on the lees for 48 months. Aromatics are upfront and expressive – citrus and peach to the fore. The palate shows clarity and freshness, a fine, lively mousse, and a bone-dry finish. Combines charm with real refreshment. Alc: 12%.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Birdsong Rosé Extra Brut 2018
Price: R385
Entirely from Pinot Noir, 50% from Darling and 40% Durbanville. Matured on the lees for 60 months. Raspberry, strawberry, orange, an appealing Parma ham-like nuance, and a hint of spice on the nose. The palate is full-bodied with tangy acidity and a soft, creamy mousse, the finish savoury. Has a pleasing vinosity about it. Alc: 12%.

CE’s rating: 92/100.

Pieter Ferreira Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut 2019
Price: R535
Entirely from Chardonnay, 62% Cape Agulhas, 23% Robertson, 15% Darling. A small portion of the base wine fermented in barrel. Matured on the lees for 72 months. A hint of flinty reduction precedes notes of pear, peach, citrus, green apple, and a subtle leesy complexity. The palate is pure and precise – full-bodied and yet vibrant, with a creamy mousse, the finish dry but not aggressively so. Complex and thoroughly rewarding. Alc: 11.93%.

CE’s rating: 95/100.

Interestingly, I scored the Pieter Ferreira Blanc de Blancs 2017 and 2018 both 95/100 at the recent Tim Atkin tasting in London. Anne and Pieter were working hard between the Pieter Ferreira Wine table and the Graham Beck table. Really phenomenal wines from Bubbles. Cuvee Clive ain’t that shoddy either! :0)
