Porseleinberg Syrah 2015

Can’t touch this.

The Porseleinberg Syrah, from Boekenhoutkloof’s Swartland property and as made by Callie Louw, is now such a cult phenomenon that it sells out on release. It shapes the debate, however, so herewith tasting notes and rating for the 2015.

The nose is a pungent amalgam of cherries and pomegranate, scrub, earth and liquorice. The palate, meanwhile, is super-intense with seemingly quite moderate acidity, the tannins fine yet somehow still severe. It’s delicious and the seriousness of intent that went into the winemaking cannot be questioned but it’s perhaps not what you’d call “graceful”.

Editor’s rating: 94/100.
